I dipinti di Liljefors spesso danno l'impressione di un evento drammatico illuminato dai fulmini. I jay hanno percepito il pericolo. Si è già preso il volo mentre l'altro apre il suo becco corto e rotondo per fare la sua dura chiamata di avvertimento. Liljefors ha studiato e disegnato uccelli vivi ma ha anche usato fotografie e uccelli ripieni – che ha montato all'aperto in un ambiente naturale. La composizione con il ramo in primo piano vicino e il bordo di foresta hazy in background migliorano la sensazione che questo è un momento congelato.
