L'attuale stato di conservazione della lastra non è buono, come ci sono numerosi graffi, cuciture e alterazioni di colore; ancora, la tunica del henchman sulla destra, le brezze di quella a sinistra e la veste rosea di Cristo sul terreno sono ridipinte. Molte versioni della composizione sono conosciute, alcune con variazioni. In tutte queste varianti, Cristo è legato ad una colonna bassa, che riproduce quella portata a Roma da Gerusalemme dal cardinale Colonna nel XIII secolo e depositata nella basilica di Santa Prassede.
