Il teologo protestante Karl Reinthaler, che fondò il Martinsstift a Erfurt nel 1821, voleva promuovere una vita familiare armoniosa. Lo Stift era situato all'interno dell'ex monastero agostiniano dove Martin Lutero aveva vissuto e fu usato per crescere bambini poveri.
