I primi visitatori di Yosemite videro la valle in termini religiosi e storici, come le caratteristiche geologiche primordiali alle grandi rovine della civiltà occidentale. Siti come le piramidi egizie e il Colosseo romano erano diventati familiari attraverso stereografie di fotografi europei. In questa fotografia di Cathedral Rock, chiamata per la sua somiglianza con l'architettura gotica, Watkins ha sottolineato la qualità monumentale delle tortuose guglie di granito che riempiono quasi interamente la cornice.
