Saraceni probabilmente dipinse questo olio su rame subito dopo il suo arrivo a Roma intorno al 1598 e in risposta specificamente alla pala d’altare di Francesco Bassano che rappresenta questo soggetto nella Chiesa romana del Gesù. L'influenza degli artisti veneziani rimane forte in termini di composizione, ma l'impatto stilistico degli artisti del nord attivi a Roma è già sorprendente, in particolare dai dipinti di Adam Elsheimer, che spesso ha lavorato sul rame e ha usato la sua superficie dura per rendere meticolosamente complesse forme a piccola scala. Il patrono di questo dipinto è sconosciuto, ma è probabilmente ritratto come l'uomo che guarda fuori dal fondo della composizione sinistra.
