Dopo la guerra mondiale Terminai nel 1919, Soutine rimase a Céret, una piccola città dei Pirenei, per circa tre anni. Questa città si trova nella Francia sud-occidentale, a 30 km dall'entroterra della costa mediterranea, e a 10 km dal confine franco-spagnolo. È anche noto come un luogo dove, durante il picco del Cubismo, Picasso e Braque spesso sono venuti a creare le loro opere. Soutine ha ricevuto il supporto da un commerciante d'arte, Zborowski, che ha sostenuto infallibilmente Modigliani pure. Qui a Céret, Soutine creò molti dei suoi capolavori.
