La popolarità dell’Italia tra gli artisti del paesaggio cominciò a declinare fin dal 1820 come artisti cercavano nuovi terreni. La topografia dinamica della Foresta di Fontainebleau e diversi artisti di vegetazione attirarono artisti come Théodore Rousseau, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, e Charles-Émile Jacque lontano dalla città densa e inquinata. Situati nei vicini villaggi di Chailly e Barbizon, questi e altri artisti simili si dedicano alla pittura in plein air (open air), sperando di catturare le sfumature degli stati fugaci della natura.
