Nel 1888 Filiger si trasferì a Pont-Aven, dove incontrò Gauguin e i suoi amici alla Pension Gloanec. Ha abbandonato uno stile naturalista per i principi del Synthetism e, come illustratore di immagini popolari, ha cominciato a creare piccole scene in gouache che ha chiamato "piccoli illuminazioni" e che sono comunemente noti come Notations chromatiques (Colour Notations). Rappresentano circa un terzo delle sue opere e raffigurano paesaggi o scene religiose ambientate a Le Pouldu. L'influenza del Japonismo è evidente in questo paesaggio di Breton, in particolare nell'albero inclinato.
