Ulrich ha studiato a Monaco e ha trascorso la maggior parte della sua carriera all'estero, dipingendo scene pittoresche della vita quotidiana. Qui, ha mostrato lavoratori che soffiano vetro, un mestiere rianimato a Venezia durante la fine del XIX secolo. L'ambiente è il centro di vetro della città sull'isola di Murano. Il fascino di Ulrich con soggetti artigianali ha parallelizzato il movimento internazionale di arti e mestieri, che ha apprezzato l'artigianato vecchio stile sulla produzione industriale. Il dipinto ha vinto un consistente premio in denaro nel 1886 alla National Academy of Design’s second Prize Fund Exhibition, riflettendo il grado in cui un gusto internazionale era emerso nell’arte americana.
