Come giovane artista nel suo nativo New York, Moore fu membro dell'Associazione per l'avanzamento della verità nell'arte, fondata nel 1863 e molto ispirata agli scritti di Ruskin. Attraverso il professor Charles Eliot Norton, fu introdotto a Ruskin e lavorò con lui a Venezia nell'inverno del 1876-77. Una nota della figlia dell’artista, su una vecchia etichetta che accompagna questa immagine, riporta che fu “verniciata a Venezia da mio padre Charles Herbert Moore, tra il 1876 e l’aprile 1877. Di alcuni dettagli sulla facciata di San Giorgio in questo edificio, Ruskin ha detto che avrebbe dato il suo dito per poterli dipingere come mio padre ha fatto. ”
