Responsabile per le estensioni alla Glasgow School of Art nel 1896 e poi nel 1910, l'architetto Charles Rennie Mackintosh fu incaricato da Miss Catherine Cranston, nel 1897, di rinnovare una sala da tè a 114 Argyle Street, Glasgow. Per quanto riguarda la prima sala da tè fatta per lei, ha progettato l'intero programma architettonico e i mobili per le varie stanze. Questa sedia era destinata alla sala da pranzo e per la prima volta ha usato la parte alta posteriore che divenne caratteristica di Mackintosh
