Frederick e Julia Billings acquisirono tre scene egiziane di Charles Théodore Frère, un pittore francese che studiò sotto Cogniet e Roqueplan, ed espose per la prima volta al Salone di Parigi del 1834. visitò l'Algeria nel 1837, e cominciò a dipingere le scene esotiche del Vicino Oriente per le quali divenne più conosciuto. Negli anni successivi viaggiò ampiamente intorno al Mediterraneo, visitando Malta e Grecia, trascorrendo un anno e mezzo a Costantinopoli, visitando la Siria, la Palestina e l'Egitto. I suoi dipinti di quei viaggi cominciarono ad apparire nei Saloni del 1855 e più tardi.
