La base è delimitata da un righello graduato usato per segnare minuti sul bordo e annotare gli angoli da misurazioni topografiche. Per creare grafici, è stato utilizzato su una scheda di circa un metro quadrato, supportato su un treppiede, in cima al quale la carta che doveva essere disegnata è stata posata.
