Una delle icone del Reading Public Museum, la monumentale pittura di Christopher Shearer fu una delle prime ad entrare nella collezione d’arte. Shearer racconta la storia del dipinto prima di entrare nella collezione del museo nel 1913: “...nell’anno 1887, ho iniziato a dipingere la grande “Smoky Range Mountain”. Questa tela è stata dipinta con l'espressa speranza che sarebbe stata posseduta da Reading, il luogo di nascita dell'artista, come monumento alla sua memoria. Le tele [sic], essendo 8 x 16 piedi, hanno richiesto una grande stanza in cui dipingere. Questa camera è stata fornita dalla commissione Fairmount Park a Philadelphia, che ha dato la grande sala nella Mansion Randolph.... ”
