La seconda visita di Donatello a Roma avvenne tra il 1432 e il 1433. L'artista ritornò a Firenze non solo con una vivida impressione di opere classiche ed elleniste ma anche con una forte ammirazione per l'effetto brillante della decorazione Cosmatesca medievale in mosaico colorato che aveva osservato in molte chiese romane. Questa influenza divenne molto marcata nelle opere eseguite a Firenze durante i dieci anni che seguirono la sua visita. Un esempio è il marmo incompiuto David, ora nella Washington National Gallery.
