Claude Gellée (1602-1682) è famoso per i suoi dipinti paesaggistici. Port de mer au soleil Sofaant è una visione idealizzata, inventata dall'artista ma ispirata agli studi che ha completato durante i suoi viaggi in Italia, dove si stabilì a Roma. La luce dà tutta la sua profondità sulla scena. Questa prospettiva atmosferica è accentuata anche da un retroilluminazione in primo piano, che cattura l'occhio.
