Due anni prima che il movimento impressionista entrasse ufficialmente in esistenza, Monet dipinse questa scena che ha tutte le sue caratteristiche, in particolare il famoso pennello frammentato. Le regate di Argenteuil sono state dipinte in luce naturale, perché i tubi di latta e i cavalletti portatili hanno permesso agli artisti di lasciare i loro studi e dipingere fuori. Monet cercò di catturare la fluidità dell'aria e dell'acqua e il modo in cui cambiarono con la luce. Ha spiegato cosa stava cercando di fare: "Voglio fare qualcosa di immateriale. È spaventoso, questa luce che si allontana e prende il colore con esso".
