Questo dipinto è uno di un numero che in precedenza sono stati attribuiti all'artista valenciennes Simon Marmion (attivo del 1449, morto 1489). Anche se sono note numerose illuminazioni manuscipt di Marmion, non ci sono dipinti documentati. Il Saint Bertin Altarpiece (Gemäldegalerie, Berlino) è stato assegnato a Marmion poco più di prove circostanziali. Tra i migliori dipinti raggruppati intorno a esso sono una crocifissione nella John G. Johnson Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art, e una lamentazione nella Robert Lehman Collection (1975.1.128) a The Met. L'immagine attuale è marcatamente inferiore a questi in qualità. È strettamente correlato stilisticamente a un Cristo prima di Caiaphas nella Collezione Johnson e può essere dalla stessa mano.
