Tra il 1890 e il 1891 Monet dedicò circa trenta dipinti ai fienili in un campo vicino alla sua casa a Giverny. In mezzo a questo sforzo, ha scritto al critico Gustave Geoffroy: "Mi sto lavorando molto duramente, lottando con una serie di effetti diversi (haystacks), ma in questa stagione il sole imposta così velocemente che non posso seguirlo. . Più continuo, più vedo che è necessario molto lavoro per riuscire a rendere ciò che cerco". Haystacks è stato il primo gruppo di dipinti che Monet ha esposto come una serie; nel 1891, quindici sono stati mostrati alla Galerie Durand-Ruel a Parigi.
