Il congelamento prolungato e le forti nevicate nell'inverno del 1892–93 ispirarono Monet a catturare i loro effetti sulla Senna in una serie di dipinti per cui scelse un punto di osservazione non lontano dalla sua casa a Giverny. Il fiume si era congelato a metà gennaio, ma ha cominciato a scongelare il 23; il giorno seguente, in una lettera al suo commerciante, Durand-Ruel, Monet lamentava che "il disgelo è venuto troppo presto per me . . . i risultati - solo quattro o cinque tele e sono lontani dal completo." Alla fine di febbraio, tuttavia, aveva finito più di una dozzina di dipinti, tra cui questa vista del ghiaccio fuso fiori.
