Tra il 1899 e il 1901, Monet produsse quasi cento viste sul fiume Tamigi a Londra. Dipinse Waterloo Bridge e Charing Cross Bridge dalla sua stanza nel Savoy Hotel e le Case del Parlamento dall'Ospedale di San Tommaso attraverso il fiume. L'artista continuò a perfezionare i dipinti fino al 1903, quando scrisse al suo concessionario Durand-Ruel: "Non posso mandarti una singola tela di Londra... È indispensabile avere tutti davanti a me, e dire la verità non si è definitivamente concluso. Li sviluppi tutti insieme." Nel 1904, questo lavoro e altri trentasei furono mostrati nella galleria di Durand-Ruel a Parigi.
