Nel 1878 Monet si trasferì lungo la Senna da Argenteuil a Vétheuil, una piccola città su una curva nel fiume. Nei prossimi anni avrebbe dipinto Vétheuil da diversi punti di vista e in ogni stagione, come si vede dalle rive dei fiumi, dai prati, e da una barca che aveva organizzato come una sorta di studio galleggiante. Fu durante l'inverno del 1878/79 che Monet eseguì questa immagine, guardando di nuovo attraverso i ghiacciai della Senna verso la torre della chiesa medievale di Vétheuil. Il 12 dicembre 1879, il Dr. de Bellio, avido collezionista dell’opera di Monet, scrisse all’artista che questa era una tela che non avrebbe mai lasciato il suo possesso.
