Una di una serie di dipinti Monet lavorò durante l'inverno del 1892-1893 quando la Senna vicino alla sua casa a Giverny congelato e scongelato in rapida successione. In questo momento Monet dipinse frequentemente in serie la stessa scena in tempi variabili della giornata nel tentativo di catturare i cambiamenti degli effetti atmosferici della luce e del colore. In questa immagine Monet si concentrò sui flussi di ghiaccio che si diffondono sotto un cielo blu-grigio coperto, mentre altri nella serie catturano la scena sotto una bella somma mattutina o l'effetto refrigerante di una nebbia ghiacciata. Le lamentele di Monet, mentre dipingono la serie, circa il freddo estremo e l'arrivo intemporale del disgelo, forse spiegano le ampie pennellate che sembrano essere state posate in fretta.
