Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) è famoso per i suoi paesaggi e i suoi dipinti marini creati in Italia. Nel 1753 ricevette una prestigiosa commissione dal direttore degli edifici reali: la rappresentazione dei 22 porti principali della Francia. Vernet ha completato 15, tra cui quello del Porto di Marsiglia. In questa vista sulla città di Phocean, Vernet leggermente esagera il numero di barche. Egli raffigura diversi personaggi sulla banchina, tra cui alcuni che indossano indumenti turchi, evocando il commercio con l'Oriente. Nella sua composizione, concede più spazio al porto che al mare, al fine di approfondire meglio, in primo piano, i prodotti e gli affari che derivano dal commercio marittimo, che era Marsiglia
