Col John W. Thomason, USMC, ha usato qualunque materiale avesse a disposizione per catturare momenti sul campo di battaglia. La stessa mancanza di materiali fornisce l'impatto di questo lavoro incompiuto. Le tonalità di blu aggiungono profondità ai Marines che ha disegnato in inchiostro; usa il giallo per creare la luce del mattino presto. La sensazione di anticipazione è palpabile come i Marines aspettano il tempo di avanzare. A pagina 168 nell'edizione 1926 di Fix Bayonets!, Thomason scrive: “Il 6o ha preso Blanc Mont e lo stanno tenendo contro pesanti attacchi contro gli sportelli. . La divisione si sta raggruppando intorno al Ridge, ma siamo piuttosto isolati dai francesi. Stanotte stiamo andando su e prendere la prima linea, e attaccare verso St. Etinne-á-Armes . . . . Salite fino a Blanc Mont con le vostre aziende –P.C. sarà lì, lungo la strada che attraversa il Ridge. ”
