Biografia dell'artista:Col John W. Thomason, USMC, era un capitano durante la prima guerra mondiale. Come artista, ha usato le sue abilità per dipingere esempi rappresentativi di soldati tedeschi che indossano tre tipi di ingranaggi della testa. Questa creazione di tempera e inchiostro su carta ha servito due scopi. In primo luogo, aveva obiettivi per sparare e, in secondo luogo, avrebbe più facilmente riconoscere il nemico. Le opere sono segnate da buchi da lui Modello 1911 .45 pistola calibro.
