Le logge vaticane erano basate in uno dei progetti di Bramante, lasciate incompiute alla sua morte. Il piano era quello di costruire tre livelli di passerelle sovrapposte al piano terra, con i lati esterni aperti per interagire con il giardino che si affacciava. Il progetto è stato ultimato dopo la metà del Seicento sotto Papa Paolo IV. La struttura armoniosa è stata concepita come un'elegante facciata per mascherare il frammento degli edifici più antichi, come si vede nel disegno di Van Heemskerck del 1530.
