Cornelis Troost è stato il pittore olandese leader del XVIII secolo. Aveva uno sfondo teatrale e scene narrative dipinte con dettagli umoristici. Qui vediamo un gruppo di persone che vanno da casa a casa mentre celebrano l'Epifania, conosciuta nei Paesi Bassi come Driekoningen (Tre Re). I vendicatori, che sono vestiti come i Tre Re della storia di Natale, cantano canzoni tradizionali e portano una lanterna a forma di stella. Le madri sono uscite dalle loro case con i loro figli per chiedersi alla luce splendente che emana dalla stella. Troost spesso ha lavorato con i gouache (acquerello opaco con gomma arabica) e pastello (calk morbido), una tecnica particolarmente popolare nel XVIII secolo.
