Questo ritratto incompiuto è stato identificato come opera di Daniele da Volterra, fedele seguace di Michelangelo e autore di un busto di bronzo del grande artista fiorentino. Infatti, un inventario redatto dopo la morte di Daniele elenca "un ritratto di Michelangelo sul pannello". La fonte per numerose copie, il ritratto fu probabilmente dipinto circa 1545, quando Michelangelo sarebbe stato circa settanta. Anche se l'opera sembra incompiuta, Daniele ha completamente descritto le caratteristiche dello scultore e la sua mano sinistra, quasi ricordando il concetto di Michelangelo che, "è necessario tenere la bussola di uno" in uno" occhi e non in mano, per le mani giustiziano, ma gli occhi giudicano".
