Nel mito classico Proserpine è stato rapito da Plutone, il dio degli inferi, per essere sua moglie. Implorò di essere ritornata in terra, ma perché aveva mangiato dei semi di melograno Plutone l'ha confinata nel suo regno per metà di ogni anno. Viene mostrata qui mangiando un melograno che simboleggia la prigionia. Jane Morris ha modellato per Proserpine. Era sposata con Dante Gabriel Rossetti
