Il gusto per i supporti di rame tra i collezionisti si trasferì dall'Italia all'Europa settentrionale, in particolare ad Anversa, dove questo lavoro fu probabilmente dipinto a metà del XVII secolo. Teniers era un pittore prolifico molto coinvolto nella corte fiamminga. Questo dipinto è stato acquistato da un collezionista americano durante la Rivoluzione francese e donato a The Met poco dopo la fondazione del museo. Il soggetto biblico rappresenta l'eroina ebraica Judith, che ha salvato la città di Bethulia dapprima e poi decapitando il generale assiro Holofernes. Judith appare accompagnato dalla cameriera e mostra la testa di Holofernes come un trofeo.
