Nel 1925, quando la pittura del soffitto della cupola delle scale Dutuit al musée du Petit Palais di Parigi, Maurice Denis creò una storia visiva dell'arte francese e concesse a Claude Monet un posto importante tra le principali figure dell'impressionismo. Insieme a Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Auguste Renoir e Paul Cézanne. Maurice Denis visitò Claude Monet tre volte a Giverny, il 17 febbraio 1924, il 16 novembre 1924, e infine il 5 luglio 1925. In queste occasioni, come la sua abitudine, l'artista ha prodotto diversi schizzi di vita, tra cui il notevole ritratto di Monet in Giverny durante la sua seconda visita. Le note della sua rivista attestano l'ammirazione che Maurice Denis ha tenuto per il maestro dell'impressionismo, in particolare per il pittore
