Dong Qichang compose e trascrisse questo epitaffio per una coppia—Wang Jihuan (Wang Chengxu, 1559–1611) e sua moglie, Madame Min (1558–1622)—a richiesta del figlio. I Wang erano mercanti colti della provincia di Anhui che hanno fatto la loro fortuna principalmente nel commercio del sale. Come è tipico di un epitaffio formale, il testo racconta le storie di vita del defunto e esalta le loro virtù in linguaggio altamente stilizzato. Commissionare un tale testo, in particolare da un famoso studioso e calligrafo come Dong Qichang, è stato un modo per i bambini di onorare i loro genitori. Dong utilizza lo script semicursivo, che si trova anche nella scrittura informale, ma la regolarità ariosa delle linee e la costruzione stabile dei suoi personaggi investono il lavoro con un senso di gravitas.
