Questa veduta del profilo del primo flautista e concertista dell'Opéra di Parigi, Joseph-Henri Altès, è uno dei numerosi ritratti di musicisti di Degas. Come una "piccola barzelletta", Lousine Havemeyer, che originariamente possedeva il dipinto, l'ha appeso tra due ritratti rinascimentali ed è stato abbastanza contento di trovare che "il maestro moderno ha tenuto il proprio."
