Poco dopo che fu completato circa 1877, Degas diede questa foto ad Alexis Rouart e sua moglie. Rouart era un vecchio amico e ex compagno di scuola, ma Degas era ancora più vicino a suo fratello Henri, un pittore dilettante la cui impressionante collezione di opere di Degas includeva i grandi ballerini che praticavano al Bar (29.100.34). Il ballerino Onstage passò poi al figlio di Alexis Henri.
