Questo pastello fu acquistato direttamente da Edgar Degas da William Rockhill Nelson, il fondatore del Museo, nel 1896. Degas evoca subtly la gamma dei suoi toni cutanei mentre il suo uso di pastello evidenzia la crescente importanza del colore nel suo tardo lavoro.
