Il figliastro di Manet, Léon Koëlla-Leenhoff, ricordò che aveva posto per questa foto nel 1861, quando aveva circa dieci anni. Manet lo vestiva in un costume seicentesco, aggiungendo una spada d'epoca come prop—un omaggio ai grandi pittori spagnoli che ammirava, in particolare Velázquez. I critici riesarono favorevolmente il lavoro nelle cinque occasioni che Manet lo espose tra il 1862 e il 1872. Nel 1889, il collezionista di New York Erwin Davis donò a Boy con una Spada e Young Lady nel 1866 (89.21.3) al Metropolitan; furono le prime opere di Manet ad entrare in una collezione museale.
