Questo lavoro è sempre stato pensato di appartenere al gruppo di nature morte floreali che Manet dipinse a metà degli anni 1860 e, quindi, di essere contemporaneo con il Museo" Peonies (1976.201.16). Tuttavia, l'applicazione spessa di vernice e tavolozza calda suggeriscono una data di circa 1860. Infatti, la stessa tovaglia decorata oro e blu appare in Manet's Portrait of the Artist's Parents (Musée d'Orsay, Parigi), che à ̈ firmato e datato 1860. Come tale, questo potrebbe essere la prima pittura di fiore di Manet. Manet diede questa vita alla sorella dell'artista Berthe Morisot Yves, forse in occasione del suo matrimonio con Théodore Gobillard nel dicembre 1866.
