Questo dipinto è pensato per essere ispirato da un dipinto dello stesso tema di Annibale Carracci, un pittore barocco italiano. Questo dipinto è stato acquistato all'asta nel 1986 per il prezzo di 1,6 milioni di franchi. Dopo la sua mostra presso la galleria, tuttavia, è stato riconosciuto come un vero e proprio dipinto di Poussin, e è stato restituito al venditore originale, che ha alzato il prezzo chiedendo a oltre 15 milioni di euro. Il Louvre e il Museo di Belle Arti di Lione sono stati finalmente in grado di raccogliere abbastanza soldi e acquistare il dipinto nel 2007, con il prezzo finale di 17 milioni di euro. Attualmente risiede nel Museo delle Belle Arti di Lione.
