Munch intraprese questa composizione nel 1890 (Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo), mentre viveva nella periferia parigina di Saint-Cloud. Il suo amico, il poeta danese Emanuel Goldstein, ha posato per l'enigmatica figura alta sagomata al chiaro di luna. L'umore malinconico è stato legato alla recente morte del padre di Munch, ma la scena sembra aver avuto un significato più ampio per l'artista. L'ha ripetuto più volte in diversi media; questa versione è stata dipinta nel 1893, a Berlino, in un momento in cui ha fatto una serie di scene di finestre notturne, notevoli per la loro atmosfera intima e effetti di luce evocativi.
