Charleston, nativo della Carolina del Sud, Edwin Augustus Harleston è stato un laureato del prestigioso Avery Normal Institute a Charleston e Atlanta University. Ad Atlanta studiò sociologia sotto il noto studioso Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, e nel 1905 Harleston fu accettato all'Università di Harvard per continuare la sua formazione di arti liberali.
