Deerhounds sono stati allevati per cacciare il cervo correndo loro giù, un metodo noto come coursing o deer stalking. In questo studio, Landseer ha evocato simpaticamente la vivacità e la poise del suo soggetto. Il cane appare in una simile posa, sfocato sotto la mano del suo padrone, il duca di Gordon, nella scena di Landseer nelle Highlands scozzesi (ca. 1825–28; collezione privata). Il dipinto è stato uno dei primi ritratti di caccia aristocratica dell'artista, e ha rafforzato il suo aumento meteorico come primo pittore britannico di animali e immagini sportive.
