Una ceramica di Kyoto con stretti legami con i literati nella sua città e un gusto simile per stili cinesi, Hozen era conosciuto per le sue verruche altamente colorate e per il suo uso dell'oro. Un lato diverso della sua urbanità viene attraverso in questo dipinto piuttosto personale, forse temperato dai fallimenti di affari che ha sperimentato nei suoi ultimi anni. Pochi colpi di pennello economico creano la figura di una volpe-priest, protagonista nel fumetto kyōgen dramma The Fox Trapper (Kirigitsune). La poesia enigmatica ammonisce: Attenzione a coloro che hanno rinunciato al mondo, anche se indossano le vesti di sacerdotia cuore sono volpi ancora.
