Nel 1864 Vedder completò un grande dipinto di una grande creatura mitica scavando in una collina su una riva sabbiosa. Ora nel Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, quel dipinto era basato su uno sketch che Vedder rielaborò trentacinque anni dopo per creare questa tela. Le immense dimensioni del serpente marino, il corpo denso e arrotolato, e il posizionamento incongruo in un ambiente tranquillo suggeriscono l'influenza sul Vedder dei demoni notturnimarish, come quelli ritratti da Gustave Doré e Francisco de Goya, soprattutto negli Aquatints di quest'ultimo pubblicati come Los Caprichos nel 1799.
