Sofferente da malattia polmonare, Madame Potemkina (1797–1869), accompagnata dal marito, lasciò la Russia per cercare cure mediche all'estero. Visitarono l'Inghilterra, la Svizzera e l'Italia, e a Parigi si pose per Vigée Le Brun. Il pittore suggerisce la riserva e il ritiro della sitter, qualità rinforzate dallo sfondo atmosferico.
