Con il sostegno di Maria Antonietta e Luigi XVI, Vigée Le Brun divenne una delle quattordici donne (tra cui 550 artisti) ammesse all'Académie royale de peinture et de scultura prima della Rivoluzione. Al suo primo Salon, ha mostrato un certo numero di ritratti, tra cui una della regina in un vestito di muslino bianco e cappello di paglia. La caratterizzazione del monarca fu ammirata. Tuttavia, il costume pastorale è stato condannato come inappropriato per la rappresentazione pubblica della regalità e l'artista è stato chiesto di rimuoverlo dalla mostra.
