Dei dieci figli nati a Luigi XV e Marie Leszczynska, solo Mesdames Adélaïde e Victoire sopravvissero alla Rivoluzione. Smarriti e avvicinati a sessanta, gli aristocratici una volta ostinati emigrarono nel 1791. Attraversarono le Alpi in inverno e si stabilirono a Roma, dove erano in gran parte dipendenti dalla gentilezza degli altri. Vigée Le Brun ritrae le due donne come cittadini privati anziani i cui vestiti quasi identici suggeriscono il modo in cui le loro vite erano intrecciate.
