Anche se nacque a Cincinnati, Elizabeth Nourse si trasferì in Francia nel 1887, dove trascorse la sua lunga e prolifica carriera come pittore espatriato. Nel 1890 Nourse viaggiò in Italia per un lungo soggiorno visitando Grottaferrata, Tivoli, Venezia, Firenze e Roma. Questo acquerello etereo con San Marco sullo sfondo mostra Nourse che lavora fuori dalle porte, non solo un pittore di studio di madri e bambini, il lavoro per cui è meglio conosciuta.
