Rand fu un artista di successo il cui lavoro, nel profondo della Grande Depressione, fu determinante nel sostegno finanziario del marito e dei tre figli. Solo nel 1930 guadagnava più di $ 74.000 dalle commissioni di ritratto, e uno dei suoi tre dipinti di Franklin D. Roosevelt è il suo ritratto ufficiale della Casa Bianca. Un ritrattista altamente qualificato, Rand avrebbe naturalmente considerato esattamente come voleva la storia di vederla. Nel suo autoritratto del 1927 è inconfondibilmente l'artista professionista al lavoro nel suo studio, armato degli strumenti della sua professione.
