All'Esposizione Universale del 1889, Emile Gallé fece la conoscenza del poeta Robert de Montesquiou. I due uomini erano molto vicini fino ad un giorno fatidico nel giugno del 1897, quando vennero abbattuti in una delle liti che abitudine misero fine alle amicizie con il conte molto toccato. Nel frattempo, all'inizio del 1893, Gallé aveva dato a Montesquiou Misterious Grapes. Come Montesquiou gli aveva chiesto perché, Gallé scrisse:
